The Seven P’s of Prayer

What!? You skipped your prayer time?!! How can you be so stupid? Don’t you know how important prayer is? I mean, you’re a missionary for ‘God’s sake’, how can you start your day without prayer? This was a conversation I recently had with myself after stumbling through my morning without prayer. Then I took my guilt and frustration to the place where we should always go when we’ve been really stupid.

Lord, I miss you, I’m sorry I have neglected my time with you. Please forgive me. How often have I started my prayer time this way? For someone who’s ministry is prayer and prayer training it seems absurd that I would struggle with my own prayer times. Yet, here I was again, repenting and weeping before the Lord for not making prayer a priority in my schedule. Through my tears I cried out, Lord, why do I keep neglecting prayer? I have enjoyed such awesome times with You. I love it when we’re together. Why do I let other things crowd out our fellowship?

The answer came so quickly I was a little shocked. You don’t understand the P’s of prayer. Then He began to flood my mind with seven attributes of prayer all starting with the letter P. As I wrote them down and read over them, I felt deeply challenged. I began to see these aspects of prayer as a value statement for my time. They have helped me keep the pressures of life in perspective. Perhaps they will help you. On those days when you don’t have time to pray, look over this list. Maybe there is something else you can cut out of your schedule besides prayer.

Power of Prayer
Prayer has the power to provide for our needs, to change someone’s life, or hold back the judgments of God. Does your favorite TV show or an extra hour at your office carry that kind of power? With such a world changing force within our grasp, shouldn’t we use it?
(Open the Book: Psalms 62:11; 68:35; Isaiah40:29)

Presence of Prayer
Do you enjoy the presence of God? The very essence of prayer is fellowship with Him. He can be found no where else. Prayer is the doorbell to God’s house and He is waiting for you to come visit.
(Open the Book: John 14:23; John.15:15; Ephesians 2:13)

Privilege of Prayer
Is there a higher privilege in all the world, than to hang out with the Creator of the whole universe? If Billy Graham, or James Dobson, invited you over to dinner, would you go? You have a standing invitation to come and sup with Jesus. Don’t be late for dinner.
(Open the Book: Hebrews 10:19-22; Mark 11:24; Psalms 145:18-19)

Peace of Prayer
Outside of your mother’s womb, can there be a place of greater peace than prayer? Is there anything more restful than to snuggle down into the arms of the One who loves your soul? He accepts you like you are. Won’t you lay down your striving, tune out the world, and come into the peaceful embrace of your Savior? (Open the Book: Isaiah 26:3; Philippians 4:6-7; Romans 8:6)

Preciousness of Prayer
Of all the things we treasure, is there anything so valuable as prayer? It is so precious to Christ that He continues even now, from His heavenly home, to devote Himself to pray for you. Shouldn’t prayer be the most precious thing in your life? Doesn’t it deserve to be number one on your To-Do list? (Open the Book: Psalms 139:17; Hebrews 4:14-16; Deuteronomy 4:7)

Provision of Prayer
Every need you will ever have can be found in prayer. Do you need comfort, a job, a home? Nothing is to small or too big for God. He knows your needs even before you ask. There is nothing you can do that will secure your prosperity more than prayer followed by obedience.
(Open the Book: 1 John 3:22; Matthew 21:22; John 16:24)

Protection of Prayer
Do you need protection? He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. Can there be a safer place in all the universe than in the shadow of the Almighty God? The protection of prayer stirs up boldness in our hearts to pull down strongholds and resist the schemes of the evil one. (Open the Book: Psalms 91:1; 18:2; 71:3)

Do you need God’s peace, His power, His prosperity? Is prayer precious to you? Is it number 1 on your To-Do list?

Let’s receive these P’s of prayer as a value statement for our time and energies. Let them motivate us to put time with God in it’s proper place, and become a witness of His peace and power.
