God’s Tribute

We all know the story of the ten lepers, who came to Jesus asking to be healed.
When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. Luke 17:14

All ten of the lepers were cleansed, but only one returned to thank Jesus. Was that because the others were ungrateful slobs? Maybe not? Perhaps they just didn’t realize from where their blessing had come. It was as they were going, that they were healed. Maybe they didn’t make the connection that their blessing had come from Jesus.

Some of us are like that. As we go along, we receive many blessings from God, health, provision, security, etc. but we continue on our way, and we don’t go back and tithe.

What!? Did you say, “Tithe?” “Yea, that’s right, tithe.” You see, tithing is our way of acknowledging to God that we understand where our blessings come from. Just like the leper who returned to Jesus, it’s our way of saying “Thank You, we understand that what we have just received has come from your hand.” If you’re not setting aside a portion of your income as a tribute to God, then you are just like the lepers who continued on their way without properly acknowledging the One who had blessed them.

“Yea but, I tell God I’m grateful for my blessings. I thank Him every night.” Well, you know what they say, “Talk is cheap.” They also say, “Put your money where your mouth is.” Actually, God was saying something like that when He said. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Luke 12:34 “Thank You” is nice, but it’s not a tribute. It doesn’t demonstrate the same esteem and honor to God that a gift from your treasure does. “Thank you,” is a good way to say, “I’m grateful”, but it doesn’t say, “You alone are God and every blessing I have received has come from Your hand.” That’s what giving back a portion of your treasure says to God.

Do you honor God with a portion of your income each week, or each month? Are you setting aside a part of your treasure as a tribute to the One who is the source of all your treasure? He is worthy, and you will find yourself blessed as you give proper tribute and honor God as the source of all blessings.

God Says:
– “Thus all the tithe of the land, of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s; it is holy to the Lord.” -Leviticus 27:30
– “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.” -Malachi 3:10

The Cost of Not Tithing:
“If, therefore, a man wishes to redeem part of his tithe, he shall add to it one-fifth of it.” -Leviticus 27:31

If you are not tithing, then you are in essence redeeming your tithe at an additional cost of 1/5, or 20%. That means that if your tithe was supposed to be $100 and you kept it for yourself, it will end up costing you $120. If we give 10% to God, he will make sure the 90% we have left will be enough. If we keep all 100% that we get, we will never have enough because of the 20% penalty we incur for redeeming back our tithe.
