Historical Overview
Land of God's Choosing
“For the LORD will not abandon His people,
Nor will He forsake
His inheritance.”

Psalm 94

The history of Israel and the Jewish people has developed over 35 centuries. The Bible records the first thousand years of this history, during which the Jews developed a cultural, national and religious identity within the Land of Israel. Although the Jewish people have been dispersed all around the world, there has always been a Jewish presence in Israel.

Even those living in other nations never forgot their roots or the land God promised their forefathers. In 1948, 2,000 years after the Jews were forced from their homeland, Israel once again became an official Jewish State. For thousands of years the Jews have been trickling back to their homeland from over 70 countries, and now it is a patchwork of multiethnic communities living side by side.

Over the past 50 years, the population of Israel has grown seven fold. The 6.2 million inhabitants are made up of people from every ethnic background, religion and lifestyle. Jews comprise about 78% of the population, and non-Jewish people, mostly Arabs, number about 22%.

"O house of Israel, bless the LORD; O house of Aaron, bless the LORD; O house of Levi, bless the LORD; You who revere the LORD, bless the LORD. Blessed be the LORD from Zion, Who dwells in Jerusalem. Praise the LORD!" Psalm 135:19-21

Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem

Pray for Jerusalem

The Wailing Wall, Jerusalem

“for he who touches you,
touches the
apple of His eye.”

Zec.2:8

“On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed watchmen; All day and all night they will never keep silent. You who remind the LORD, take no rest for yourselves; And give Him no rest until He establishes And makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.” Is.62:6-7

Jerusalem, Israel's capital (population 657,500), has stood at the center of the Jewish people's national and spiritual life since King David made it the capital of his kingdom some 3000 years ago. Today it is the seat of the government and Israel's largest city.
With 3,000 years of history behind it, Jerusalem is now thrust to the center of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

The epicenter of the conflict lies in Jerusalem and more specifically on the Temple Mount in the Old City. The Jews of Israel are locked in a conflict with their Palestinian Arab neighbors.

Although the Temple hasn't stood for almost 2,000 years, Jerusalem continues to be the focus of the Jewish world. The Temple may not be there, but Jews believe that the intrinsic holiness of the site always remains.

In fact, Jerusalem's Temple Mount is one of the most revered and contested pieces of land in the world. Moslems call the site Hareem al-Sharef. It's where the Al Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock are located. To Jews, it is the place where Kings Solomon and Herod built the first and second Temples: the holiest place in the Jewish religion. Jewish tradition also maintains that in the End of Days, during the Messianic Era, a third and final Temple will be built on Mount Moriah.

(sources:Rabbi Ken Spiro, article, “Jerusalem...Jewish and Muslim claims to the Holy City”; Chris Mitchell, article, “Trouble at the Temple Mount.”)

“ But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King”.Matt. 5:34-35

"The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you , And give you peace." Num. 6:24-26

“...for he who touches you, touches the apple of His eye.”Zec.2:8

"If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
may my right hand forget its skill.
May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth
if I do not remember you,
If I do not consider Jerusalem
my highest joy."
-Psalm 137:5-6

Testimonies from the Land
Hear from the people of Israel

The Wailing Wall, Jerusalem

“Weep with those who weep”

Romans 12

Personal Commentary: We Are People Too
by Moshe Sheskin, Naomi Ragan News, August 14, 2002

“A number of years ago, during a stint in the Israel army reserves, I was posted at one of the bridges over the Jordan River. It was my unit's responsibility to examine the travelers, coming from Jordan, prior to their entry into Israel and the disputed territories in order to prevent contraband from entering the country, especially detonators.

As our commanding officer remarked, "Remember, if a bomb goes off due to your negligence, it may also mean the life of your wife and children." His comments had an instantaneous effect upon us and although the temperature in the Jordan Valley in August hovered around the 50 degree mark and hordes of flies added to our discomfort, we meticulously examined each and every traveler, their documents, baggage, personal effects and a body search when necessary.

At one point, while going through the process, a young lady shouted at me. "We are people too you know." Her anger and discomfort were apparent but the words were penetrating so that for many years, during my more liberal period, I couldn't shake her cry and my feeling at that time echoed her frustration and agony. Peace was a necessity and I was convinced that it was within the realms of possibility, at least within the next few years...”

Jerusalem: The rhythm of life
by Ann Feinstein

© 2002 WorldNetDaily.com

Living and staying alive have become two vastly different concepts in Israel ever since the eruption of the al-Aksa intifada in September 2000. Living refers to being employed and being able to make rent payments and purchase basic groceries. Staying alive is what makes living look good even if you have become another unemployment statistic (as I was for many months) with no relief in sight.

Fear has become a constant undertone in our lives. Although it is not apparent upon first glance, it has influenced our behavior on many levels. We have altered our lives to accommodate detonating cars, exploding men and women, snipers and stabbers. Funerals have become a regular feature on the news – an untimely showcase of the lives of innocent men, women and children … so many children, violently snuffed out in the most horrid manner imaginable.

Israel is like a tautly drawn rubber band being plucked incessantly and in grave danger of snapping. Security being our No. 1 priority has caused severe economic strife and social problems (like the burgeoning unemployment rate) to soar to new heights. These issues which have been largely ignored, despite intense warning signs, have become too immense and overwhelming for anyone to tame, much less eradicate.

 Shalhevet 10 months
Killed April 2002 by Palestinian gunman, shot in the head

We Are Tired of Crying
by Clarence H. Wagner, Jr. & Rebecca Brimmer

"We are tired of crying, tired of mourning, tired of sorrow," said Rabbi Kadosh as he spoke to the friends and family of Marlene Menahem, 22, killed in a bus bomb. His words shot like an arrow into our hearts. We, like all our Israeli friends, are tired of terror and weary from sorrow.

Since September 2000, Israel has been wracked with one terror attack after another. There have been 13,935 attacks during the past twenty-three months. More than 600 Israelis have been killed, among them 422 civilians. Perhaps even more devastating are the injured, 4,462, many of whom are severely wounded and will never fully recover. The impact of these numbers upon the society in Israel is enormous, because the population of Israel is relatively small. Almost everyone knows someone who has been killed or injured, or has been near to an attack or heard an explosion of some kind.

The ongoing attacks have also severely wounded the economy. Many are without work. Tourism, once the number one industry of Israel, has fallen to an all time low, causing many to lose their employment, from guides to others as hotels, restaurants and shops are closing. Increased security needs have further stretched the weak economy.
