It is currently home to the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, now referred to as MEB-Afghanistan, (nickname: Task Force Leatherneck). Read more: http://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2008/08/fob_salerno_withstan.php#ixzz0Rue3udS4FOB Salerno (also known as Firebase Salerno) is a forward operating base of the U.S. military in south eastern province of Khowst, near the city of Khost in Afghanistan about 15 kilometers from the Pakistan border.

The facility was occupied by the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, and was named for the beachhead in Salerno that the 509th parachuted onto on September 14, 1943 (Operation Avalanche). It has been nicknamed “Rocket City” due to the large amounts of incoming rocket and mortar fire in previous years.

It is the main Coalition hub for operations in southeastern Afghanistan.

Kandahar Airbase

This Week in the News >>

kandaharKandahar Airfield has been occupied and maintained by the U.S. military since 2001 when the Marines landed and took over control of the airport. Since 2006 the airfield has been maintained by the Canadian Forces, but there are also other NATO forces present.

Although a prominent base for the US and Canadian Forces, many other Armed Forces are based there. British Forces use Kandahar as their main staging post for the South and fly direct into the Helmand province. Fast jets and combat helicopters are also deployed here as this is the main airport in the troubled south-east of the country.

As of 2007, Kandahar Airport has been rebuilt and is used for both military and civilian flights. It is sometimes difficult to locate the airport from the sky during day-time because of lack of contrast with the ground and the usual dust or haze in the area. But during night time the runway is well lit up and can easily be spotted.

Camp Bastion

This Week in the News >>

camp-bastionCamp Bastion is the main British military base in Afghanistan. It is situated northwest of Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand Province. It is the largest British overseas military camp built since World War II.

Built in early 2006, the camp is situated in a remote desert area, far from population centers. Four miles long by two miles wide, it has an airstrip and a field hospital and full accommodation for the 2000 men stationed there.

The base is divided into 2 main parts, Bastion 1 and Bastion 2. Bastion 2 includes two tenant camps, Camp Barber (US) and Camp Viking (DK). Bastion also adjoins Camp Leatherneck (US) and Camp Tombstone.

camp-bastion2In November 2006, Tony Blair visited Camp Bastion, and, while addressing a gathering of British troops, described it as “an extraordinary piece of desert” “where the fate of world security in the early 21st century is going to be decided.”

A 2,350 meter long and 28 meter wide runway, was built in 2007 that allows C-17s to land.

Kunduz Airfield

This Week in the News >>

german-soldiersThe Kunduz Airfield is operated by German troops, and located in the Kunduz Province in northern Afghanistan. There are currently 667 German troops stationed at the Kunduz airfield; of which only 340 are combat-ready.

Violence levels in Kunduz have peaked over the past 18 months, and intelligence reports, as well as Afghan government and tribal elder testimony, suggest that as many as 80 al Qaeda-linked militants, including Uzbeks and Chechens, are operating in areas southwest of Kunduz City.

This area was also the site of the recent air strike on fuel tankers that reportedly killed 70 people, including civilians.

The Dutch are present in Uruzgan as part of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission in Afghanistan.

Kamp Holland was a U.S. base (known as Forward Operating Base (FOB Ripley) until ISAF assumed control for Afghanistan’s security in August 2006 and the U.S. turned over the base to the Netherlands.

Approximately 1,100 Dutch and 360 Australian personnel are stationed at Kamp Holland. The staff of Task Force Uruzgan and a Dutch AH-64D Apache detachment are deployed at Kamp Holland as well.

Father God, please protect and guide my husband Joseph to be of service to all those in need of his gifts. Give him courage, compasion, and love in all situations. Let him feel the wings of angels holding him close to you. Free all those who are suffering, full of anxiety, and fear of the unknown, as well as the elements that surround them. Thank you dear father in heaven for being with each and everyone, and for your love and protection. Bring peace, and light to this area. Amen

We thank you for those willing to protect our freedoms and for those who come to you in prayer to spiritually watch over them. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Our son-in-law recently left for Camp Leatherneck. Vicki, Would you please tell us how to make the cool ties for our troops? We would really like to something special and I think this would tell them we are thinking of them as well as attending to a real need. We will be praying for your family’s adjustment to the return home from deployment. Thats a big adjustment, too!!!May our Heavenly Father continue to watch over all of our troops where ever they are. My brother is a Viet Nam Vet amd I know they still need our prayers and that some of them are our best prayer warriors! May God continue to bless our country and our troops. Please continue to pray for the families at home. It is especially hard for the children when a parent is gone for so long and repeatedly. PLEASE continue to pray for these young children and their well being and endurance and peace of mind for the spouse at home.GOD BLESS ON THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEK END!

Thank you our Father , who is watching all from above and is still here with our soldiers. Thank you for never leaving them in their hour of need. I pray that you continue to send armies of your powerful angels to help in this fight that seems so impossible to win. Thank you for keeping our boys safe, and for keeping our son Joe safe, with many near misses. Keep them invisible from the enemy…let all the victories be for your glory. Hear the prayers of our young men and women, who need you so desperately. After all is said and done, you are their only absolute, their only hope. Be with the families left at home…protect them. Give comfort to those who have lost loved ones to this war, for reasons only you know about. We praise you and thank you , in Jesus name. Amen

Deb, My son just left Camp Joyce after being there for a year. My daughter in law and I sent him canned goods like soups and speghetti o’s and cans of fruit. We also sent hard candy and gum. He probably will need the usual men’s toiletries and suntan lotion and socks and foot deoderant and powder. My church makes whats called cool ties to keep the soldiers cool while they are out in their manuevers. Baked good (mainly like cookies or candy)items that won’t melt or spoil is very well liked to. I hope this will help you out. I will continue to pray for you and your son as well. May God bless both of you.

Thank you for more information about the military. I appreciate this website very much and that it gives me a focus for prayers for our troops.

I am sure there are many sources of information about US and NATO allies that our enemies can use. However, I agree with the comments of Charles, whose comment is already listed below. Please take some of the information about the sites off your webpage. Please find out from the Department of Defense what should and should not be listed as information about US and NATO troops. I will also try to find that out by doing a web search but I’m sure you have more contacts than I have. I know you are just trying to make sure we have more information for our prayers. This comment is not against the writers of prayers or information listed here. Its just a request to make sure what is suggested as information to give from a website. Thank you for all you do.

Saying hi to my son whoes location is unknown at this time. Hurrah for you and your unit. Keep taking down the strongholds of the enemy. We miss you so much. I am not sure you will even see this but just wanted to let you know we are always thinking of you day and night. I keep hearing you saying “hey mom whats up and “hey mom I’m coming home” and have dreams where you surprise me at my work while I am on duty and the kids say look behind you and there you are walking toward me in your favorite uniform looking so handsome and I run into your arms and hold on as tight or even tighter then I did before you were deployed. We miss you so as I am sure many others miss their loved ones. We are praying that God our Father in heaven will bring this war to an end and we will have a season of peace. His peace that only he can give. Keep giving the Glory to God as to why you and unit have been successful as you said in your last e-mail and phone call. God hears his people and blesses those who give the Glory to him where it should be. Just be assured our LOrd is fighting this war with supernatural powers we can not see with our physical eyes but can with our spritual eyes. He is so good all the time. Well, I will say see you later alligator, be strong, alert, motivated and focused on the task ahead.
    LOVE,
    MOM
GOD HAS HIS MIGHTY HAND OVER YOU ALWAYS!!!

We pray for the safe return of all of our brave young men and women from Camp Joyce/Afghanastan. Our son was deployed two months ago from 25ID in Hawaii for a year’s tour. With the death of Bin Laden, our prayers are even stronger that these precious young people will stay safe and stronger in the face of possible retaliation. Use all your training and remember how many family members are awaiting your safe return to us! Keep strong, remain focused and keep your heads down! We love you Josh!

My Brother and his Brigade from Hawaii reported last week to Camp Joyce. I pray for the safe return of all of our military members. Being a Vet myself, I know the hardships they endure under normal training situations. But Wartime is a different matter altogether! However – Our Military is the Best Trained in the entire world. Do your thing and whatever it takes to come back home! I pray that God will comfort their families and keep them strong. “Man” we love and miss you much! Keep your head down!
