Prayer for South Sudan

A boy wears a t-shirt calling for separation of South and North Sudan, in Terekeka, South Sudan.

Through years of tribal and governmental conflict, South Sudan became a new nation in 2011. Unfortunately, since December 2013, more fighting broke out between governmental and rebel forces, as well as between tribes, which has caused millions of people to flee their homes for safety. South Sudan rebels have killed hundreds of people while others have endured violence along ethnic lines. Join us in praying on behalf of these dear people, who have suffered so much trauma for many years.

911 Prayer for South Sudan

“For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.”
–Ephesians 2:14-16

Jesus, only you have the power to put to death the years of hostility. We proclaim the power of the cross to bring repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation. Release an outpouring of compassion to those who have the ability to help those who are homeless and destitute and are in need of medical care. We pray that the orphans will be placed in families who will care for them and demonstrate Your love.

Lord, release wisdom and reconciliation between Sudanese leaders and tribal groups. Pour out a spirit of revelation on President Salva Kiir (who is from the Dinka tribe) and Vice-President Riek Machar (who is from the Nuer tribe). We ask for strength and courage to do what’s right in Your sight.

We bless Your church which has grown rapidly in the South over the years. May those who are now believers within the government and military seek You and serve You, and release constructive policies and actions that will heal their land.

We stand in faith, asking for a hopeful future for South Sudan, no matter what we see with our eyes. We pray for a day when Sudan’s natural resources will be used to benefit all it’s citizens and that a strong infrastructure, jobs and education will be birthed in the land. God, we thank You that Your vision for Sudan is greater than any of us can imagine, and in this we hope. In the glorious name of Jesus, amen.

Sword of the Word, Verses for you to use:

“Until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high,
And the wilderness becomes a fruitful field,
And the fruitful field is counted as a forest. Then justice will dwell in the wilderness,
And righteousness remain in the fruitful field. The work of righteousness will be peace,
And the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever.”
–Isaiah 32:15-17

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
–Isaiah 55:8-9
