Iraq is now in its worst crisis since the 2003 war.
ISIS (the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria Group) is one of numerous Jihadist groups formed to fight the Assad government in Syria. They are a group that does not even see Al Qaida as extreme enough, and have taken advantage of the growing tension over the border in Iraq between the Sunni minority and Shia-led government.
Recently, ISIS has moved into Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city (which is modern-day Nineveh.) Mosul is also the heartland of the ancient Assyrian Christian community. ISIS has taken control, destroyed all government departments, and allowed all prisoners out of the prisons. They have killed countless numbers of people. All of these attacks have forced people to flee their homes by hundreds of thousands to Southern Kurdistan for safety. As a result, the Kurds have had to control its border, preventing entry of ISIS, while allowing controlled access for the refugees. The crisis is so huge and with the situation constantly changing, this makes it very difficult to get a full grasp of current events on the ground.
ISIS militias have taken over more towns and are moving towards the capital city of Baghdad. Many Iraqis no longer trust their national army after soldiers retreated from the ISIS advance. The people are very scared and are preparing for the worst.
Let’s stand in the gap for this ancient nation…the nation Jonah, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego prayed for many years ago. May God release His glory in the land just like He did in their day!
“Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven,
and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for,
it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.” (Matthew 18:18-19)
Lord of Hosts, we stand in the gap for the nation of Iraq…
We pray for:
- The government and military to be united and strong in dealing with this invasion and not to be overcome by fear. We ask You, Lord God, to release wisdom, good judgment, and ability to retake the cities in the north and western parts of the country that have been overrun.
- We pray for millions of refugees that have left their homes. God of all comfort, guide them to safe shelter, food, and water. May there be a swift response from the government and the international community. Jesus, we ask for angelic assistance and protection over the innocents who are caught in the middle of this conflict. We bless the people and leaders of Kurdistan, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey in dealing with the refugees of Iraq and Syria.
- For our Christian brothers and sisters… We ask that the Christians will not be discouraged and will come together in united, authoritative prayer for their nation. May they be given the courage and boldness of Daniel the prophet. Release miracles through their prayers and witness, to shut the mouths of the lions!
- Together, in the name and by the blood of Jesus, we bind the spirit of lawlessness and violence that has been inciting these terror groups in committing atrocities. We loose the peace of Christ over the land, which surpasses understanding. We declare that the NAME that is above EVERY NAME to be revealed in power, signs and wonders. At the hearing of Your name, Lord Jesus, may every knee bow, above and below to Your name. We pray for a harvest of souls unlike anything ever seen in Iraq. You have shed Your blood for these people and we implore You to receive the reward for Your suffering.
It is in You, Lord of Heaven and Earth we trust and hope.
In the beautiful name of Jesus, amen.
Sword of the Word, Verses for you to use:
“When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple. Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them. But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.'” -Jonah 2:7-9
“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him.” -Daniel 2:20-22
“Sing to the Lord, all the earth;
proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples. Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols,
but the Lord made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and joy are in his dwelling place. Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
bring an offering and come before him.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.”
-1 Chronicles 16:23-29

P.S. Remember that Ramadan starts at the end of June! This 30-day Muslim fasting practice is also a time where we can be dedicating a little extra prayer for Muslims in the Middle East, and worldwide, to come into the saving knowledge of the love of Christ.
