“I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5
What is it?
The bible word, “abide” means “to be present; to continue together; to remain as one.” Abiding is intimate communion with God. Close relationship has always been your Creator’s desire. When God created man and woman, He walked with them in the garden (Genesis 1-3) Though sin made a separation between man and God, Jesus died, so man could be close to God again.
When Jesus talked about, “Abiding” in John 15, He spoke about the branch and the vine. In this bible passage, He described the type of relationship you are meant to have with Him. Just as a vine and a branch have a close, dependent connection, that is the kind of experience He wants with you. He promised that you could have whatever you asked in prayer if you were abiding in Him. This is where all effective prayer starts, close intimate fellowship with Jesus.
Abiding is really friendship with God. This is the place where He will share His heart with you and you will know His will. This section is devoted to developing your abiding. Here’s what we will be covering.
Where does abiding come from? Accepting your need of Christ and His completed work on the cross. “By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” -Hebrews 10:10
Receiving the unconditional love of the Father through Jesus the Son. “For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” -Romans 8:15
Enjoying the Presence and fellowship of God. “God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” -1 Corinthians 1:9
What does it looks like? Peace, Love, Security Abiding is the place where God is your very best friend. It is unwavering confidence in being loved and accepted by God the Father. It’s a place where you share your heart and He shares His.
What does it accomplish? It keeps you free from the grip of your enemies. You will find the ‘way of escape’ from the temptations of the world, the flesh and the devil. You will be strengthened in His Presence and your heart will be able to see and do the Father’s plan for you. Your life will be a sweet fragrance to those around you.
What are the obstacles? Independence, fear, disobedience, pride. “For he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” -Hebrews 11:6
